Oregon State currently has a small campus on the Central Oregon Community College grounds, (Oregon State University Cascade campus), but has been talking for some time about expanding to a full 4 year university. In late September the college took a huge step in turning these talks into a reality. OSU has made an offer to purchase land for their new campus. The The Finance & Administration Committee of the Oregon State Board of Higher Education approved the land acqusition in late September.
The new campus is slated to go in near the inersection of Chandler and Simpson Avenues on the SW Side of Bend near Broken Top and Cascade Middle School. They plan on purchasing 56 acres of land, a 10 acre parcel and a 46 acre parce. The 10 acre parcel is slated to close in October, while the 46 acre parcel is scheduled to close in March of 2014 while due dilligence is done.
The OSU Cascade website reports that they hope to have the college open by the Fall 2015 term.
This is exciting news for the Bend community. A four year university will only expand our economy and growth. Restuarants and shops on the west side of Bend can't wait for the boom in business that is expected. Our real estate market will likely see a spike on Bend's west side. Rentals will be in high demand near the college.
If OSU Cascades was available when I was going to college, I would have made the choice to go in a heart beat. Mt Bachelor is less than 30 minutes away, Mt Bike trails are very near, Breweries within walking distance, and lots of recreation opportunities in close proximity.
